How does winter suddenly creep up on us? One minute we’re complaining it’s too hot and humid and then suddenly we wake up to more refreshing mornings and colder evenings. It’s the time of year that we often need to nurture ourselves more. Depending on your body type, we can sometimes crave warmer foods and drinks, more hours sleeping and even a shift in our exercise routine. Our bodies are very clever machines and know exactly what to do to help protect us as we become more susceptible to winter bugs! Even now, at the start of autumn many people are getting sniffles or even full blown flu. So what can we do to protect ourselves and our family?
I like to focus on using natural support as much as possible and one of the main things I use daily to support the health of my family is essential oils.
What are essential oils?
Essential Oils are naturally occurring volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, barks, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They can be as much as 50-70% more powerful than herbs. In nature they act as a defence mechanism for plants and cells. They have been historically used for the many health benefits that they can provide as they are safe and effective for the whole family. Many are naturally anti-viral and anti-bacterial so are a great natural support.
Here are my top 5 suggestions for oils to use during the winter season to support your family:
Oregano essential oil may help support a healthy immune system and used with exercise and good food choices, can improve overall health and wellness. It supports a healthy respiratory function and so is a top choice in winter.
One of my favourite oils and an essential oil to support overall wellness. This ancient oil is prized for so many amazing health benefits. It is very soothing oil and can help support cellular function.
It is particularly good for supporting the health of our skin and nails during the winter months as we start to get drier skin. Massaged into the skin can also provide a warming effect too, especially if combined with an oil that supports healthy circulation such as black pepper. Also ensure that you dilute the essential oils with a carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, jojoba, almond etc.) before massaging into the skin.
Frankincense may support healthy immune function and response and may help to support healthy lung and respiratory function, especially when combined with citrus oils.
Lemon essential oil cleanses and purifies the air and surfaces so is a great choice to use for cleaning around the home. When diffused it is very uplifting and energising so would be great to use when the bugs are starting to make you feel very run down and you need a ‘pick me up.’
Lemon also supports a healthy respiratory function and would work well with oregano.
During the winter months we can often feel much lower in energy. Peppermint provides a wonderful energy boost any time of day. Relieve fatigue by inhaling on a tissue or using in the diffuser. A great combination in the diffuser for an afternoon energy boost is peppermint and wild orange: uplifting and energising.
Peppermint can also promote a healthy respiratory function and clear breathing and when diffused Promotes feelings of clear airways and easy breathing.
One of the most important things we can do to support our immune system is to ensure that we get enough sleep.
Lavender is often used for its calming and relaxing properties. Spray onto your pillow before bed time to prepare for a restful night’s sleep. Alternatively add a few drops to a bath along with some epsom salts and a carrier oil for the perfect way to unwind before you go to bed.
Lavender may help to support healthy immune function and response during times of seasonal threats and it synergistically helps to soothe and calm the nervous system.
The most effective ways to use essential oils is through inhalation and my preferred method is in a diffuser so the whole family can benefit.

Natural solutions are always my first choice to support the health of me and my family. I am also a great believer in eating lots of fruit and vegetables as food truly is medicine. There are very few people who consume enough fruit and vegetables on a daily basis so be creative with how you can add more fruit and veg into your family’s diet. Think smoothies with ginger for extra support during the winter months, soup, stews and curries. Listen to what your body is craving during the winter months as it will often be different to what it requires during the summer months.
